Transition to and within Colleges

The Executive Group agreed that the issue of transition to and within colleges is a key factor in promoting access to further and higher education. To this end, the Vice Chair of the Forum convened a working group to discuss the benefits of reviewing practice in relation to transition and to come up with ideas for projects, should they be necessary. Following a bidding process, two projects were set up in 2006/07 to explore two key issues in this area:

Easing the transition from school to College

This project identified national good practice in this area, looked at barriers that existed locally, and compiled guidance that can be used by schools and colleges to improve the transition between the sectors. Read the report on easing the transition from school to college.

Creating independent learners

This project aimed to promote a culture of independent learning within colleges, in order to prepare students for future lifelong learning challenges. The project identified good practice nationally and mapped the current status of independent learning within North Forum partner colleges, setting out guidance and tools to encourage colleges to promote this development within learning and teaching.
