Mapping ethnicity in the Highlands and Islands

This research project was undertaken by Inverness College between mid 2003 and the end of 2004. The overall aim was to identify barriers to access and participation in Further and Higher Education amongst minority ethnic groups in Moray and the Highlands and Islands. Starting with a literature review, the methodology combined quantitative data drawn from the 2001 census and qualitative information from the providers of post school education and from minority ethnic groups in the study area. The report makes many observations about the barriers faced by people from minority ethnic groups who are living in the research area and makes clear recommendations about action that should be taken to address these barriers. The recommendations relate both to individual institutions and to the Forum.

Since August 2005, the Forum has contributed to a national project, run jointly with the other three Regional Forums, as a means of addressing some of the recommendations made in the report. This project is the development of a Diversity Pack and it is run by The Open University in Scotland.

Area covered: Moray, the Highlands and Islands
