The Forum took the decision in 2005 to develop and deliver a schools outreach project to work with schools with low progression rates to higher education across the whole of its geographical area and that would build on the good practice developed within other projects nationally (including the University of Children and Communities).
ASPIRENorth started on 1st January 2006; it aims to raise the aspirations of school pupils to participate in post-compulsory education and to raise awareness about the educational opportunities that are available.
ASPIRENorth delivers a programme of activity to target schools across the whole of the North Forum area. Its business plan was developed on the basis of current national widening participation policy, existing national good practice in widening participation practice and ongoing consultation with local stakeholders.
ASPIRENorth’s remit is to engage with young people from P7 to S4 in order to:
The overarching objective of the programme is to facilitate young people in making more positive and better informed decisions about their post-school educational choices. Eight key strategic aims have been identified, all of which are aligned closely with the findings of the Scottish Funding Council’s ‘Learning for All’ report of autumn 2005.
